March E-Mentoring Curriculum

Resume Development – Objectives of the lesson this month (March 2009)

Writing a resume; In order to present a concise and practical way to apply for jobs in the summer or for internships while in college – the discussion this month will concentrate on resume and cover letter development.
Activities:

1. If Student has a resume – please send this to your mentor to discuss it for content and format. Will it be useable? Is it something that is eye-catching?
2. Students that do not have a resume study various templates for writing their resume.  Go to websites such as http://docs.google.com/templates?q=resume
Then they e-mail their resume to Mentor for feedback and further  development
3. Students and mentors COMPLETE your profile on LinkedIn by the end of this month. You can cut and paste from your resume to do this – please look at Bev Fritz (on LinkedIn) to understand the full extent of your profile.
4. Students e-mail your resume to Bev at bev@saintpaulchamber.com by April 1

**Use words in your resume that you have learned from your DiSC profile.

Writing a cover letter: Students are led through the process of writing a cover letter for a job that they have researched and for which they would like to apply (this was information they gathered in February)
Activities:

1. Mentor writes (or shares) a cover letter as a practice example for the student
2. Student prepares own cover letter using example from mentor or template that is researched on line.
3. Mentor talk about the importance of a cover letter being specific to the job that you are seeking.
4. Mentor and Student talk about how the DiSC profile helps you write a cover letter. What can you say about yourself that would help a potential employer understand how you would fit into their ‘team’?

Writing a thank-you note; Mentors share importance of student being appreciative.
Activities:

1. Student hand writes a thank you note to mentor (pretending you have interviewed for a job) and mails this.
2. Mentors please send Bev via PDF file the student’s thank you note
