Governor Pawlenty vetoed the tax
bill earlier this week as promised, due to the fact it contained a
provision that automatically incorporates inflation into
future budget forecasts. Also included in the bill were
provisions for Thompson West, Local Government Aid, the
2008 Republican National Convention and a troubling
provision for the business community which would have
increased business property taxes in the metro area to
partially pay for the Mall of America expansion.
A special session to re-pass non-controversial
portions of the bill has not been ruled out. If
a special session is called, your Chamber will advocate
for a revised Bonding Bill, including $40 million in
funding for Central Corridor.

Congress is in the process of
crafting the Federal Aviation Reauthorization
Act.
Because the Twin Cities is a hub for both Sun Country
and Northwest Airlines, and serves as corporate
headquarters for a number of Fortune 500 companies,
the region has a vested interest in
ensuring the ongoing strength of the aviation industry.
