St. Paul is a great place to live and work but, just like any metropolitan area, there are prevalent social issues such as young people that lack stable housing. Any one organization alone cannot address this – or other challenges our community faces – successfully. That’s why it’s so important for businesses and nonprofits to partner together to pursue solutions and influence change.
Elpis Enterprises is a St. Paul-based social enterprise (a nonprofit that sells products and operates as a business). We provide opportunities and paid job experience to those in our community who need it most, homeless youth. Through a set of comprehensive training programs, including woodworking, screen printing, mentorship guidance and access to education, our interns gain the confidence to rise above homelessness and overcome adversity by learning social and technical skills that lead to a long-term career path. To hear first-hand from Elpis interns about the impact our programs have, check out this video.
We can’t achieve this alone, though; it’s through the generous support of the St. Paul community that we are able to impact the lives of our interns. At our core, we are a business working to give hope and purpose to homeless youth. In order to accomplish this, we need the support of local businesses, and there’s no better way to support us than through our screen printing enterprise. We offer full service t-shirt screen printing that’s competitively priced and includes design, artwork adaptation, printing and delivery. With this service, local businesses can receive customized t-shirts for their next event while supporting homeless youth. Elpis also conducts birdhouse building workshops at local parks and outdoor events. So far this year, Elpis has helped 2,400 children and adults build a birdhouse for their backyards and gardens.
There are a number of ways for businesses to engage with us beyond purchasing T-shirts. Mentorship is a great way to have an impact on local youth and since our interns aspire to careers in many different fields, the opportunity to learn from successful professionals is a valuable part of their training. Financial contributions also help us to maintain and upgrade our equipment, expand our training programs to include more skills, help our interns with transportation to and from work and offer free birdhouse-building workshops for children’s programs.
Ultimately, we believe the path out of homelessness is employment. Our goal is to connect interns that are ready to move on from Elpis with employers that will help them gain lasting job security and financial independence. The skills our interns develop are transferrable to many job settings. For information about hiring from Elpis, please contact us.
Our mission is simple; through comprehensive programs, we teach homeless youth valuable career skills and confidence that they can carry with them long after their time at Elpis comes to an end. Through doing business with local organizations, we continue to make this mission a reality, and we hope to for years to come. To learn more about Elpis, visit our website.
