Preventing materials from going in the trash by recycling them instead may save your business money. By “right-sizing” your trash service to reflect the smaller volume of trash generated, your garbage bill will probably be less. This is because reducing the size of your dumpster or its frequency of pickup will reduce what you pay for trash service and, in turn, the amount you pay for the County Environmental Charge and Minnesota Solid Waste Management Tax (SWM).
The County Environmental Charge (CEC) is a fee on the garbage bill you get from your licensed trash hauler. It’s based on the amount of trash your business produces and is a percentage of the cost of trash service. For Ramsey County businesses that’s 53%, for Washington County it’s 35%. Because the CEC applies only to trash and not recyclables, your business can save money by keeping food scraps and recyclables out of the trash. Switch to a smaller dumpster size or less frequent trash pickup and you'll not only reduce your garbage service cost, you'll lower the related CEC too. The Minnesota Solid Waste Management (SWM) Tax is similar to the CEC, but is charged by the State rather than your County. The SWM Tax for businesses is 17%.
#2. It's going to be required.
Most businesses in the Metro area will have to recycle at least three types of material by January 1, 2016. Are you affected? If you are the owner of a commercial building that meets the following criteria, you will need to have recycling collection:
- Located in Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, or Washington county
- Contains one or more businesses classified in sectors 42 to 81 under the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS codes)
- Contracts for four cubic yards or more per week of trash collection
