Transportation & Transit Projects
SPACC strongly supports transportation and transit programs that enable connectivity throughout the region. Increased rail and bus rapid transit lines will continue to be a priority throughout the 2017 legislative session.
SPACC is in favor of an inclusive and comprehensive state budget that allows the east metro to develop transit and maintain roads and bridges. We must be able to move goods and services throughout our region, and to provide employees with varied transportation options. On new transit, the Chamber supports the Riverview Corridor, the Gateway Corridor, and the Rush Line Corridor projects.
Job Growth and Business Climate
SPACC advocates for uniform labor standards across Minnesota. City governments have been passing labor laws that vary from city to city, like the earned sick and safe time ordinances passed by Saint Paul and Minneapolis. This causes confusion and unnecessary work for businesses, especially those that operate in both cities. A state pre-emption law would require all labor standards to be uniform across the state, so that businesses are not left guessing on how to operate when traveling between different city boundaries. SPACC is part of a coalition working on this issue.
Local Tax Reform
SPACC is in favor of state law changes to allow the city of Saint Paul to make changes to their tax code, particularly a request during the 2017 legislative session to increase the lodging tax by one percent. With the increase of the tax, the city will be able to continue to promote tourism and support the needs of the city as a tourist destination.
