Government Day’s theme this year was ‘Power and Trust,’ which may prove to be the theme for the year overall, and the day started out with the ever popular Values Exercise from Damon Shoholm and was followed by a great conversation with Mayor Carter at City Hall, heard from political reporters, including David Gillette of Almanac, LSP Class of 2015, about the upcoming legislative session and went through an exercise of debating a minimum wage increase policy from the perspective of a business owner, a retail employee, a nonprofit executive and a city council member. Local lobbyists from around town including Goff Public, University of Minnesota, and Nancy Haas, SPACC Board Member from Messerli | Kramer, were invited to guide the conversations and then participate in a Q&A to dispel the myths around lobbying. The class also heard from elected officials and were able to discuss the challenges of running for office and from people who help candidates prepare to and run for office.
Then the class headed out to the Ecolab Ice Palace for a visit to the Ice Bar, thank you to The Saint Paul Festival & Heritage’s Deb Schaber, LSP 2018, for hosting the class and finished by warming up at Gray Duck Tavern. Special thanks to Cat Beltmann, So Good Consulting, Martin Ludden, SPNN, co-chairs of the day as well as members of LSP ’16 and their committee, Jake Sedlacek, Xcel Energy, Brianne Hamm, Advantus, Shannon Watson, SPACC and Definitely Someday, all from LSP ’17.
