Education Day in June had a theme of Equity in Education. The class spent the day at Saint Paul College and increased their understanding of how institutions and organizations address equity and what the opportunities and challenges are for education in Saint Paul and the East Metro. This included hearing from Principals working in the St. Paul Schools and also the Superintendent Dr. Joe Gothard. Other highlights from the day included understanding the complexities faced by the Latinx Community in education and DACA status. The class was also able to explore partnerships that close opportunity gaps for high school students and adult learners that support economic mobility through education and meaningful career pathways. One innovative twist to the day was that the committee prepared a profile of a real student for each class member to learn about and carry with them throughout the day, then at the end of the day, three of the students shared their personal stories and educational journeys; essentially bringing the house down with their wisdom and astute observations. We were then welcomed to the new home of VIBE Realty, where Rob Glynn, LSP 2017 put on an AfterGlow for the ages, complete with photo station and prizes.
Special thanks to Jessica Espinosa, of Minnesota State, LSP 2017 and Education Day Chair and her committee Tracy Wilson of Saint Paul College and Dr. Melissa Goodson of St. Scholastica, both LSP 2017, as well as Joe Kolar, LSP 2015 who stepped in to moderate/emcee the day.
