It was another snowy kick-off day, for Leadership Saint Paul on January 11, that left us wondering if the ever-popular tour of Saint Paul and the East Metro by bus would happen. Thankfully, both the participants and the service project partners made it through the snow to start the day getting to know the amazing Curriculum Committee and hearing about the rest of the program days in 2018. Then the class was able to get to know one another, including introducing themselves and what they are an “expert” at as well as what they hoped to learn more about throughout the year. An interesting aspect of the class is that many both work and live in the East Metro, but most have just recently moved to Saint Paul; the fact that so many live here mean that they will bring differing and personal experiences to the dialogue about what is happening at every level of government and in the area, they are very dedicated to making Saint Paul and the East Metro more vibrant at the outset. The class also heard from SPACC President and CEO, B Kyle, chose their service projects, took that very snowy bus tour of St. Paul and the East Metro with Bob Butterbrodt, LSP 2013, and finished up the day with dinner at The St. Paul Grill.
There is one change from the immediate years past that the Curriculum Committee Chairs are particularly proud of, each participant was given a three-ring binder that includes journal sheets for each content day for the year. The journal sheets will help the class get centered when they arrive each morning and reflect at the end of the day.
Special thanks to the Curriculum Committee, especially Julia Jenson, Committee Chair, and Amanda Knutson, Past Committee Chair, Damon Shoholm, Curriculum Lead, Bob Butterbrodt, tour guide extraordinaire, Pete Zellmer, LSP 2013, for hosting the wine for the class dinner at The St. Paul Grill, and the service project partners for the year that made the whole day great: The Arc of Minnesota; Catholic Charities; Minnesota Museum of American Art; Park Square Theatre; People Incorporated; Portico Healthnet; Saint Paul Parks Conservancy; and Union Gospel Mission.
