Last week, I participated on a panel for the statewide Minnesota Breastfeeding Coalition Annual Meeting on how businesses and public health departments can work together to support nursing mothers. This has been an important part of my work with our worksite wellness program and our area champions utilizing their micro grants.
The businesses that chose to use their funds on supporting nursing mothers were able to help offset costs of the legal mandate stating that all nursing mothers have a space other than a restroom to express breast milk. The businesses purchased items ranging from larger items such as comfortable chairs and small refrigerators to smaller basic items like a door lock and blinds.
On the panel I was joined by public health employees that stated they had been having difficulties getting businesses on board with supporting nursing mothers. I was able to highlight the success of the Chamber’s worksite wellness micro grant program and tell the attendees ways they can engage their local chambers or businesses.
If you are a business in Ramsey County, the easiest way to engage is by contacting me! I would love to talk with you further on not only the benefits of supporting nursing mothers but how implementing a worksite wellness program can be beneficial to your workplace. Also take a look at our worksite wellness toolkit and other information about the SHIP grant through Saint Paul/Ramsey County Public Health. Please contact me if you would like more information. Also, keep an eye out for information on the 2017 micro grant round and make sure to apply!
