Isthmus Engineering has enjoyed being a part of St. Paul's Lowertown neighborhood since 2014. A woman-owned transportation engineering firm, Isthmus was founded in 2002 with the vision of supporting quality design through the efficient use of technology.
The Isthmus 25-member team is focused on the design of Minnesota's roads and transit systems which help safely move passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists. Isthmus believes that employees who have priorities that are important to them outside of work bring more to their work each day. To support this belief, Isthmus extends each of their 25 team members the autonomy to set their own working hours and to work remotely as needed.
These simple practices have enabled Isthmus attract and retain women engineers at much higher rates than the industry norm. A recent study by the American Society of Civil Engineers found that while 40% of civil engineering graduates are women, they make up only 14% of the civil engineering workforce. Isthmus takes pride in the fact that 52% of their professional staff are women engineers.
